Taunton fire officials are responding to a house explosion in the city that left multiple victims injured with burns.
Photo and video from the scene on Plain Street shows a raging inferno blazing from the shell of a building.
Two residents of the home, a mother and child, received “severe” burns in the conflagration and were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospitals, according to town officials. The mom, 25, went to Rhode Island Hospital with severe burns and the child, 2, was transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital with serious injuries.
“The situation is now under control, but this was a very serious incident,” said Steven P. Lavigne. “The weather conditions present unique challenges, but we plan for these situations.”
Police and fire initially responded to the home at 9:50 a.m. for a call of a house explosion with injuries.
Taunton Firefighters arrived at the scene and found a three-family home fully engulfed in flames. The structure is now a total loss and eight residents have been displaced.
In addition, two adjacent homes were damaged. Eversource was on site to shut off utilities at the affected homes, according to town officials.
The origin of the fire remains under investigation by Taunton Fire, Police and the State Fire Marshall’s Office.
Gov. Maura Healey says she has been briefed on the fire and is advising residents that officials are asking them to avoid the area so responders can investigate the blaze.
“I’m keeping those hurt in the explosion, their loved ones, and their neighbors in my prayers,” the governor stated in a social media post.
