WHITMAN — Championships were decided and history was made as the Division 2 state wrestling titles for boys and girls competitions were up for grabs, with Milford continuing to build a dynasty on the boys side while Putnam delivered a stunning breakthrough for back-to-back titles in the girls tournament.
Milford captured its second straight boys championship and fourth in the past five seasons, while Putnam claimed its first state title in program history, sealing the upset of two‑time defending champion Agawam with a dramatic pinfall in the final match of the day.
Milford placed five wrestlers in the state finals in five different weight classes and came away with two first-time state champions as well. Milford had things wrapped up early and finished with 157.5 points to take first place with West Springfield a distant second place with 105.5. Melrose (97.5), Agawam (96), and Somerset-Berkley (89) rounded out the top five team finishers.
Milford’s depth was the difference as Brayden Boccia at 126 pounds delivered a decisive 10-0 pinfall victory continuing a family legacy on the mat. Boccia is the son of Milford’s head coach P.J. Boccia, who also won a state title as a Scarlet Hawk sophomore a few years back which added another layer to the title run as a team.

“For the team to wrestle the way they did, it’s great,” said coach Boccia. “The honor of coaching my son and having my son win a state title as a sophomore too, it’s right there at the top.”
While Alex Javier (Somerset Berkeley) upset two-time state champion Derek Marolini (Milford) at 132 with an 8-3 decision, junior Ryan Flis stepped right in and grabbed his first title for Milford while facing two competitors he already lost to this season.
Flis was the 12th seed at 144 pounds and rolled to an 11-2 pinfall semifinal win over Beckett LeClair (West Springfield). Flis then even surprised himself and upended No. 2 Aydin Lamb (Wakefield) with a pinfall victory with the score tied 4-4 at the 5:08 mark in the third.
“This is an awesome feeling. I’ve worked hard all season as me and my brother, my partner this year, pushed me to my limits, worked hard, and got me where I am today,” said Flis, who embraced his grandfather first after the epic win. “He’s been with me all the way through the youth programs since I was in first grade wrestling all the way up to a junior in high school. He’s helped me significantly.”

In the girls division, Putnam trailed Agawam by 10.5 points, heading into the final two matches and needed two pinfall victories to capture their second straight Division 2 MIAA banner.
Leanna Watson picked up the first at 2:37 over Madison Minalga in a 3-0 pin victory while Storm Pizarro put the icing on the Division 2 title with a 6-1 pinfall victory over Thasendy Derissier of Milton.
Putnam leap frogged their way to the title with 96 points as Agawam barely missed their third divisional title with 94.5 points to finish in second place. Woburn (53), Sharon (47), and Milton (41) rounded out the top five finishers.
Watson, who is only a sophomore, is now a back-to-back D2 state champion for head coach Ahmad Sharif’s up and coming program and the sky is the limit for the Beavers and Sharif.
‘The team win for this program means a lot. I got a lot of help this season from girls wrestling for me in the past, like Denai Bias, Samantha Springer, and Janalisse Koto and they just pushed the girls,” said Sharif. “And David Gale, a mentor who coached me helped, so I’m just happy the girls have someone to look up to. Storm Pizarro is a new state champion for Putnam and did her thing to seal the deal in the end. I’m very proud of them all. “
