Eastham Police called off a search Sunday morning for a man they believe may have fallen through the ice at First Encounter Beach.
Police used a drone to look for the victim who has not yet been identified and may have fallen through Bee’s River, the department said in a statement.
The man’s wife fell through the ice on Saturday around 9 a.m. Two officers tried to rescue her but also fell in. Her body was later found by authorities.
The couple’s dog was found on the beach and reunited with extended family.
The search for the second victim had to be paused Saturday night around 5 p.m., after sunset, but continued at 7 a.m. Sunday morning until about 9 a.m.
“Additional search efforts will be conducted when changes to the ice conditions occur, allowing access for public safety personnel,” the department said.
“At the request of the victims’ family, the names of the involved individuals are being withheld to protect their privacy during this incredibly challenging time,” the department’s statement continued. “Our thoughts continue to be with the entire family in the aftermath of this tragic incident.”
