Ford Bronco Recall Hits Nearly 5,000 SUVs Over Rollaway Risk

Ford just cannot seem to catch a break with recalls lately, and the Bronco is once again part of the conversation. This latest safety campaign affects 4,922 Bronco SUVs from the 2021 through 2025 model years, but the issue is not tied to every Bronco on the road. Instead, it involves certain vehicles that previously had transmission or transfer case-related service work performed incorrectly, potentially setting the stage for drivetrain wear that could lead to a loss of power or even a rollaway situation.

The problem centers on the joint between the transmission and transfer case. If that connection was misaligned during a prior repair, the transmission output shaft splines and transfer case input splines can wear prematurely. Once those splines wear enough, the Bronco may not transfer torque properly, which could cause a loss of motive power. More concerning is the possibility that the park pawl function may not hold as intended, meaning the SUV could roll away if the parking brake is not engaged.

Owners may notice a grinding or clunking noise before the issue becomes more serious, which is a warning sign worth taking seriously. Ford is instructing dealers to inspect the transmission-to-transfer case joint, align it properly, and make sure the bolts are torqued correctly. If the splines show excessive wear, the affected drivetrain components will be replaced at no cost to the owner. That is the right move, and to Ford’s credit, the company has generally stayed aggressive about identifying and fixing these kinds of issues rather than trying to sweep them under the rug.

Still, it is hard to ignore how frequently Ford recalls have been making headlines. The Bronco remains one of the brand’s most desirable SUVs, with its rugged image, strong off-road capability, and loyal enthusiast following, but recurring recalls can chip away at owner confidence. Bronco owners who have had transmission or transfer case work done should check their VIN through Ford, NHTSA, or a local Ford or Lincoln dealer and use the parking brake until the vehicle is inspected.
