Aston Villa in the mix to sign for Swedish versatile star for summer transfer

Aston Villa is currently in the mix to sign for the versatile star from Sweden ahead of the summer transfer window.

Another target in Aston Villa transfer business has been recently exposed. He has been tipped as one of the versatile midfielders and also probably underrated. The aforementioned player is the current PFA Scotland Team of Year midfielder, Benjamin Nygren. According to the report in Glasgow World,

“He has been the key in Celtic this season, and that sparked links to Aston Villa, Tottenham and a host of other clubs.”

Rising star in the Sweden national team

Benjamin Nygren is the rising star in the current Sweden national team. He has only been capped nine times. Yet his contribution has been crucial already. Under the tutelage of Graham Potter, the 24-year-old winger has been the first choice compared to playing under Jon Dahl Tomasson.

Nygren even provided an assist each in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff round, while beating Ukraine in the semifinal and Poland in the final. Overall, he has bagged three goals and made two assists in the international stage.

At the club level, the former Genk man has played in three different top-tier leagues in Europe before landing in Celtic Park this season. Prior to Scotland, Nygren competed in the Netherlands with Heerenven, Denmark with FC Nordsjaelland and Belgium with KRC Genk.

In Heerenven, he helped them finish in the mid-table but reached the semi-finals in the KNVB Cup 2021, with his seven goals and six assists in 51 games. He went there on loan spell from Genk before switching to Denmark.

In Nordsjaelland, Nygren even bagged 35 goals and provided eight assists in 107 appearances, while in Celtic, he has already registered 20 goals and eight assists in his season debut.

Will he move to Villa Park?

Although he is tied up to his current contract until 2029, The Hoops will not seem to hold him back if his price tag is met in the next transfer window. His current price is reportedly valued at up to £26 million.

He is certainly a tempting target considering how Nygren can operate in almost all positions on the second line and both flanks as a winger, plus a central midfielder and even as a frontman. Such versatility with that kind of price would be not too high since he is still 24 years old.

There is still a space for his development, which is what Unai Emery might fancy. He could be an ideal replacement for Morgan Rogers, should he finally leave in the summer. The Swede will undoubtedly be a great addition to Villa squad as he can be another back-up for Ollie Watkins too.

It is still unclear if he is planning to leave Glasgow just after one season, since his ambition there is to win a trophy. Yet, a chance to play in the Champions League and compete in the Premier League in a team which lets him grow as a player like Villa can be too good to turn down. It will all depend on how Aston Villa transfer business plan works out later.
