Patriots re-sign backup quarterback on two-year contract

Patriots quarterback Tommy DeVito is sticking around.

The Patriots re-signed DeVito on a two-year deal worth $7.4 million with $2 million guaranteed, his agent, Sean Stellato, first told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

DeVito was set to become a restricted free agent. Tendering him would have cost the Patriots $3.52 million.

DeVito, 27, was claimed off waivers from the Giants before the 2025 season and served as the Patriots’ third-string quarterback all season. He was inactive as the Patriots’ emergency third QB in all 21 games, sitting behind Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs on the team’s quarterback depth chart.

Dobbs, 31, is set to earn $3.2 million in base salary this season as Maye’s primary backup. If the Patriots elected to trade or release Dobbs, they would free up $3.7 million in salary cap space.

The Patriots do not need to add a quarterback through the draft after locking up DeVito.

Head coach Mike Vrabel said during the Patriots’ postseason that he had seen “a lot” of growth from DeVito.

“I think that’s a tough proposition to have, is just coming in at the end of training camp and trying to get acclimated offensively,” Vrabel said. “So, to his credit, he’s done a really nice job, works with guys and receivers on Mondays, maybe guys that are on the practice squad or that didn’t play in the game. So, Ashton [Grant] takes those guys up there and is able to work through our system, and then they’ll walk through whatever reps happen today that Tommy didn’t get or what he normally doesn’t get to be ready to play. So, I have enjoyed the time here with Tommy.”

Based on his contract, DeVito will be around for at least one more season.
