A man suspected in a March double murder in Brockton has been apprehended by U.S. Marshals and other authorities in Mexico after a manhunt that spanned up and down the east coast, west to Michigan and California, and even into Haiti.
The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office says Davinci Leonard, 23, was wanted on murder and gun charges after he allegedly shot two teenagers outside of a Chipotle restaurant in Brockton back in March. DA Tim Cruz says federal law enforcement searched across the country and the Caribbean to track Leonard down.
“A lot of work was put into this case by troopers assigned to our Detective Unit, the MSP Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, Brockton Police, and our federal partners at the U.S. Marshals. This was a lengthy and thorough investigation which took officers up and down the east coast, west to Michigan and California, and then on to Haiti, and ultimately to Mexico. I commend all those involved for their hard work and determination on this case,” Cruz said.
Marshals and California-based law enforcement coordinated to apprehend Leonard on Thursday with Mexican civil police. Leonard has been brought back to the U.S. and is in the Marshals custody in San Diego. He is expected to be transported back to Massachusetts for his arraignment in Brockton District Court some time next week.
The DA’s Office says Leonard shot the two teenagers, 15-year-old Tymari Albertson and 18-year-old Cevannah Alvarez, outside of the Chipotle on Westgate Drive the night of March 22. Both Albertson and Alvarez were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with several gunshot wounds. Albertson was pronounced dead at the hospital while Alvarez was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
“Leonard fled the scene, and since that day authorities have been searching for him and gathering information about his whereabouts,” the DA’s office wrote in a statement, adding that multiple state and local agencies coordinated their investigative efforts.
Two other men have also been arrested in connection to the double murder and for helping Leonard get away. David Mosley-Lott, 32, of Quincy and Jaylen Speed, 25, of Dorchester have been indicted on charges in the double homicide for allegedly helping Leonard evade law enforcement. Mosley-Lott is charged with one count each of accessory after the fact and witness intimidation. Speed faces one count of accessory after the fact.
Leonard is charged with two counts of murder, and one count each of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and carrying ammunition without an FID card.
