Former Worcester city councilor found guilty of A+B on police officer

Former Worcester City Councilor Etel Haxhiaj was found guilty of assault and battery on a police officer Wednesday in connection to a confrontation she had with ICE last May.

A jury in Worcester handed down its verdict on Wednesday.

Haxhiaj had been a part of a large group of neighbors on Eureka St. on May 8, trying to prevent the detention of Rosane Ferreira De Oliveira, 40, a Brazilian woman then accused of assaulting her daughter.

The charges against Ferreira De Oliveira have since been dropped. She’s also been granted asylum and released from ICE custody.

Haxhiaj was arrested during the confrontation with ICE along with another Worcester resident Ashley Spring and a teenage girl, the Herald previously reported. The charges against the juvenile have been dropped.

Haxhiaj’s charges stemmed from an interaction she had with Worcester Police Officer Shauna McGuirk, who the former councilor shoved.

Her defense team argued that the officer had pushed Haxhiaj around first.

“I did not shove the officer,” Haxhiaj said on the stand. “I was protecting myself by putting distance between myself and her body.”

Body camera footage released after the incident showed Haxhiaj putting her hands on officers, trying to prevent Ferreira De Oliveira’s arrest. She’s also heard telling ICE agents, “Get out of my neighborhood, get out of our neighborhood.”

“I am trying to protect my constituents,” she said to a Worcester officer, telling him she was a city councilor and had a right to be there.

Haxhiaj had also been charged with interfering with a police officer, but a Worcester Superior Court jury found her not guilty of that count.
