Big-screen romances star in Valentine’s plans

It’s time to get romantic. Or sexy. Or weird. Or to prep your body for a 24-hour scifi film marathon.

Find your perfect film at a local theater for your Valentine’s Day, Galentine’s Day, Palentine’s Day, or rejection of these holidays.

“Wuthering Heights”

Opens Feb. 13, in theaters

Passion! Revenge! Moors! Oh, so many moors! Set on the sweeping Yorkshire moors, Emily Brontë’s classic 1847 novel has been adapted by writer-director Emerald Fennell into a (yes) sweeping film staring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.

“Dangerous Liaisons”

Feb. 13, Brattle Theater

Time to get steamy in 18th century France with Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Swoosie Kurtz, and Uma Thurman. One aristocrat asks another aristocrat to seduce yet another aristocrat to get back at a whole nother aristocrat. Naughty drama ensues. brattlefilm.org

“Casablanca”

Feb. 13 – 15, Brattle Theater

Sure, go on a date. But, better yet, go with a friend. What’s often thought of as the most romantic film of all time (Bogart! Bergman! Paris!), is also a movie about the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Oh, and kindness, altruism, pain, and defeating the Nazis in wartime Morocco. brattlefilm.org

“The Princess Bride”

Feb. 14, Coolidge Corner Theater

Hold it, hold it, are you trying to trick us? Is this a kissing movie? Well, yes, a kiss rated as the world’s most passionate, most pure. But it has also has fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, and miracles. coolidge.org

Boston Science Fiction Film Marathon

Feb. 15, Somerville Theater

The 51st annual Boston Sci-Fi closes with its traditional marathon of films from noon on Sunday to noon on Monday. Always epic, this year the line up may be the best ever. Just a few of the titles: “Aliens,” “Dune,” “Nope,” “Star Wars,” “Forbidden Planet,” and “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.” bostonscifi.com

“L’avventura”

Feb. 15, Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts

One of the landmarks of Italian cinema, Michelangelo Antonioni’s “L’avventura” is considered a weird, moody triumph of film — it won the Grand Jury prize in 1960 at Cannes. The Harvard Film Archive presents this “adventure” film and its experimental look at the mysterious disappearance of a woman while a group is on a yachting trip in the Mediterranean. Maybe the least Valentine’s Day-ish movie you can see. harvardfilmarchive.org.

“Titanic”

Feb. 17, Landmark Kendall Square

Has there ever been a film this romantic about the drowning of 1,500 people? I think not! The perfect movie if you want to spend three hours staring at Kate, Leo, or the slow sinking of a really big boat. landmarktheatres.com
