Through early testing, one of the things that’s impressed our team the most about Callaway’s new Chrome Tour golf ball was the speed increase.
But during a recent testing session, Fully Equipped co-host Jake Morrow discovered there might be something else.
“But the issue was I kept having moments where I would turn and look at [Fully Equipped Social Media Manager] Adam [Christensen] and be like, wow, that was like super out of the toe or that was super out of the heel,” Morrow said. “And then we’d look at the data. And it was at one point there was a ball that I hit with the Triple Diamond Max and I was 18 in the heel and 12 low. And the ball spun at 2700.”
Morrow explained he would have normally expected a shot like that to see a massive jump in spin, upward of 3000. But with the new Chrome Tour, the spin was staying in a good spot.

The same thing happened on the other end when Morrow hit a drive high on the face, expecting the spin to dip below 2000. But it was at 2400, a great number for a miss.
Then he switched back to the Chrome Tour X and the spin variance was even tighter.
“I need to know why, because right now the story is that the ball is really fast, but I am so far past with these golf balls, it being fast,” Morrow said. “I actually don’t think that the speed of these golf balls is the appropriate story that we should be telling. It’s the consistency and the stability of these golf balls.”
What also puzzled Morrow is that the golf balls appeared to be behaving so similarly; why did they both need to exist? Why weren’t they separated further?
“If 80% of this stuff remains consistent,” Morrow said, “then you have very, very specific parameters of just these little things that you need to choose between.”
