M25 Crash Yesterday and Lorry Fire Sparks Major Hertfordshire Disruption

A serious lorry fire and crash caused widespread disruption on the M25 in Hertfordshire, forcing the motorway to close in both directions and leaving motorists stranded for several hours.

The incident took place between Junction 25 at the A10 Great Cambridge Road in Enfield and Junction 24 at the A111 Stagg Hill in Potters Bar, an already busy stretch of the orbital motorway.

As emergency services arrived, traffic quickly ground to a halt, with queues stretching for miles and delays reaching approximately 45 minutes at their worst point.

Drivers caught within the closure were left stationary for long periods, unable to exit the motorway as smoke from the burning vehicle filled the air.

Emergency Services Battle The Blaze

Fire crews from Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue attended the scene alongside National Highways Traffic Officers, working to extinguish the blaze and secure the area.

Images from the motorway showed several fire engines positioned across the carriageway, while firefighters worked intensively to bring the fire under control.

Other photographs captured the scale of the disruption, with long lines of stationary vehicles stretching back along both sides of the M25.

National Highways confirmed the closure in an official update as operations continued.

“The M25 in Hertfordshire is closed in both directions between J25 and J24 due to a lorry fire,” the statement said.

“Emergency services including Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue are in attendance.”

“National Highways Traffic Officers are assisting with traffic management.”

Road Surface Concerns Delay Reopening

Although the fire was eventually extinguished, additional complications delayed the full reopening of the motorway.

A fluid spill from the lorry spread across the carriageway, prompting concerns over potential surface damage and vehicle safety.

Engineers were required to inspect the affected section of road before traffic could safely resume.

During this period, trapped motorists remained stationary as recovery teams began clearing debris from the scene.

Traffic Released After Hours Of Delays

By late afternoon, traffic was finally released and vehicles began moving again through the affected stretch.

Clear-up and recovery operations continued even as congestion eased, with officials warning drivers to expect residual delays.

Authorities have not confirmed whether anyone was injured during the incident.

The cause of the lorry fire also remains under investigation.
