The much anticipated launch of the Xiaomi YU7 has not disappointed, to say the least: it attracted no less than 200,000 orders in just 3 minutes and 289,000 in 1 hour. A deposit of 20,000 yuan (2,375€ or US$2,800) gives you an immediate locked order and fast delivery, as there is already a small number of almost-ready vehicles. The YU7 is the brand’s second model after the very successful SU7 sedan. For comparison, the SU7 had 50,000 pre-orders in 27 minutes and 90,000 after 24 hours, and it has accumulated 266,524 retail sales in the 15 months since its launch in March 2024. It notched up 28,516 units last April and 28,020 last May. Xiaomi announced that interest in the YU7 was three times superior as that of the SU7 (and that’s conservative), which would indicate an insane 75,000 units per month. We’re not there yet, especially given production constraints, but it’s an indication of the potential of this SUV. Note the Model Y peaked at 61,056 retail sales last December.
Prices and variants have been announced, starting at 253,900 yuan (30,150€ or US$35,400), undercutting its main competitor the Tesla Model Y (263,500 yuan). The base trim is the Standard, RWD with Single Motor, 235 kW of power, 835 km of autonomy and a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.88 sec. The Pro trim is priced at 279,900 yuan (33,250€ or US$39,000), is AWD with Dual Motor, 365 kW, 770 km of autonomy and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.27 sec. Finally the top of the line Max is priced at 329,900 yuan (39,200€ or US$46,000), is AWD with Dual Motor also, 508 kW, 760 km of autonomy, 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 3.23 sec and a top speed of 253 km/h. For reference, the top trim Model Y is priced at 313,500 yuan.
The YU7 is 4,999 mm long, 1,996 mm wide and 1,608 mm tall with a 3,000 mm wheelbase. The Model Y is 4,751 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,624 mm tall with a 2,891 mm wheelbase. The Standard and Pro trims are powered by a 96.3 kWh LFP battery while the Max trim has a 101.7 kWh NCM battery. The model supports 5.2C ultra-fast charging, good for 620 km of autonomy in just 15 minutes. Inside, we have a 1.1-meter wide panoramic screen strip with LED displays, and a floating central infotainment touch screen. The rear passengers have access to a 6.7-inch control screen.
In terms of safety features, all trims include lidar, Nvidia Thor chip and Xiaomi’s in-house assisted driving system. There is also a bullet-resistant battery shell. The plan is to start full-blown production in July at the carmaker’s second factory, with an annual objective of 150,000 units. This clearly won’t be enough and there’s already talk of Xiaomi planning a third factory to answer to the rather overwhelming demand for the model.
