Ford Motor Company is recalling 240,510 SUVs in the U.S. due to improperly secured seat belt buckle anchor bolts, which could increase the risk of injury in a crash. The recall affects 216,563 Ford Explorer SUVs and 23,947 Lincoln Aviator SUVs from model years 2020-2021, according to a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The issue stems from seat belt buckle anchor bolts that may not be properly secured in one or more seating positions. Additionally, some vehicles could have an improperly secured seat belt retractor anchor bolt or second-row center seat belt anchor bolt. If these bolts are loose, the seat belt may fail to properly restrain occupants during a crash.
Ford also noted that owners may hear squeaking or rattling noises from the affected seat belt anchor points, which could indicate a problem.
Ford began investigating in December 2024 after Transport Canada, the Canadian transportation safety agency, contacted the company regarding a defect complaint involving a 2020 Ford Explorer. As of February 4, 2025, Ford reported four warranty claims and one customer complaint potentially related to this issue. However, the company is not aware of any crashes or injuries linked to the defect.
Ford dealers will inspect all seat belt buckle anchor bolts, and for vehicles equipped with the affected second-row center seat belt system, they will also check the retractor anchor bolt and seat belt anchor bolt. If any loose anchor bolts are found, the affected components will be replaced free of charge.
Ford will begin mailing owner notification letters on March 31, 2025. Owners with questions can contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332 and reference recall number 25S09.
