Mikel Arteta says he gets angry when Arsenal concede goals

Mikel Arteta said he is not happy with Arsenal failing to keep clean sheets in their last three Premier League games.

Arsenal were the best defence in the Premier League last season as they conceded just 29 goals. Defensively, the Gunners have been one of the best teams in Europe. They shut out Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain, two of the best attacking teams in Europe’s top five leagues.

The gunners kept four clean sheets in six games towards the end of last season as they finished behind eventual champions Manchester City.

Premier League legend Alan Shearer said one of the reasons Arsenal have been transformed under Mikel Arteta was the decision to keep David Raya as number one goalkeeper:

“He’s also a good shot-stopper, which we’ve seen so many times this season; he’s saved them points, not only in the Premier League, but in the Champions League as well.”

Raya won the golden glove last season after keeping 15 clean sheets.

Mikel Arteta on Arsenal failing to keep clean sheets

The Arsenal boss says he prides himself on how the team performs on and off the ball. The Gunners conceded to newly promoted Leicester City and Southampton in consecutive games before the international break.

Mikel Arteta says he was not happy with some of the goals the team conceded:

“Well especially the way we have conceded certain goals, with the little things that we have conceded to go and concede those goals. There is room for improvement there, it’s about being very consistent and making sure that we play with a level of urgency, cohesion and focus in the reaction, because in the last few games, especially at home, we have conceded goals that I wasn’t very happy with.”

Gunners boss says Bournemouth are a real threat

Despite winning both games against the Cherries last season, Mikel Arteta insists that Bournemouth are a real threat ahead of their game this weekend:

“They are very well coached and they are super intense, really competitive and a clear idea as to how they want to do it. They should have had different results in my opinion, especially against the big teams and away from home. They’re going to be a big challenge and we’ll have to be at our best tomorrow.”

With a hectic schedule coming up between now and the next international break in November, the Arsenal boss says his team is ready for the challenge:

“We certainly have more experience to do that. During the previous period, we showed that and in very specific circumstances and different contexts, we were able to perform and get results that we wanted. Now, we have a different challenge and availability is going to be key as well because we need certain players back as quick as possible, some very important ones as well that are going to make the process better and more efficient.”
